The 2008 Open Championship was the 137th Open Championship, played 17–20 July at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, England. Pádraig Harrington of Ireland successfully defended his Open Championship title for his second Open title. Harrington shot four under on the back nine to finish four strokes ahead of Ian Poulter of England. Television coverage was provided as usual by the BBC in the UK, and by ABC and TNT in the United States. ==Field== World Number One Tiger Woods was the most notable absentee, as he was recovering from knee surgery.
